Avon Marching Black and Gold, based in Avon, Indiana, is widely recognized as one of the best high school marching bands in the country.

Most recently, they earned 1st place at the Bands of America Grand National Championships in 2025, marking their third consecutive Grand National title. They were also selected to perform in the 2024 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, a milestone few high school programs ever reach.

Their extraordinary reputation is well-earned, but you might be surprised to learn that it isn't fueled by generous funding or deep pockets.

Rather, their success is built behind the scenes through strong leadership, a culture of teamwork, and of course, consistent fundraising.

Programs like RaiseRight have played a crucial role in that effort, turning everyday purchases into fundraising dollars for a nationally competitive program. Jen Larson, who currently manages the RaiseRight program for the Avon band, credits the program's simplicity in sustaining their much-needed fundraising efforts.

All in, together

For many music programs, fundraising feels like a chore, but for Avon, it's fuel. It's what makes national competitions, parade performances, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences possible.

With 250–300 students participating across marching band, drumline, and color guard, the financial commitment is significant. The fees alone exceed $1,000 per student, and winter ensembles bring additional costs depending on the group and equipment required. Avon families also come from a wide range of financial backgrounds.

From the outside, many assume that a program performing on national stages must be well-funded.

"We’re not made of money," Jen affirms. "Everything is achieved through fundraising. We also credit a lot of our success to our director and staff."

Rather than allowing costs to be a barrier, Avon band parents have built a culture around collective support. Families share what works, doing everything they can to make sure their kids don't miss out.

Families can choose the fundraisers that fit their schedule, whether that's product sales, paid volunteer shifts at events like the Indy 500, or everyday earning programs like RaiseRight.

"My families have figured it out," Jen explains. "They're close with each other. They teach each other and spread the word."

That culture of teamwork has been especially important as opportunities (and associated expenses) have grown in recent years.

Why RaiseRight works so well

Among the band's many fundraising options, RaiseRight stands out as an ideal team fundraiser.

It doesn't require students to sell products, sacrifice their weekends, or ask others for money. Instead, band families can pull their weight in a way that fits naturally into their routine. Whether they're buying groceries, dining out, or shopping online, they can fundraise consistently without adding more to their busy schedules.

"I got tired of asking my relatives for money," Jen recalls. "When I found out I could use RaiseRight to earn money on regular purchases, it was a no-brainer. It's surprising how much you can earn on the things you're already buying."

The ripple effect

What started as a convenient option has steadily grown into one of the band's most reliable fundraisers.

In 2024, Avon Marching Black and Gold earned just over $30,000 through RaiseRight. In 2025, that total climbed 25%, surpassing $37,000.

The growth wasn't accidental.

When the band was selected to perform in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, families faced additional expenses on top of regular band fees. The financial pressure was overwhelming and time-sensitive.

"That year, we really pushed fundraising—especially RaiseRight," Jen says. "Families who were already earning shared their results, and that created a ripple effect. When one family finds success, others take notice."

Now, RaiseRight is the go-to fundraiser for dozens of Avon band families, and their dedication has also positioned Avon Marching Black and Gold as the highest-earning band on the platform.

"RaiseRight keeps up with the technology, so the whole experience feels simple and modern," Jen notes. "At the beginning of every season, we tell families to download the app and use eGift cards. That's what drives fast, consistent earning."

Fundraising drives excellence

Avon's accolades may capture national attention. But every championship title is powered by a commitment to fundraising, driven by families determined to make participation possible for every student.

As national opportunities expand and costs continue to rise, Avon families know they must use every tool available.

"We want every kid to experience these moments," Jen says. "So we use every opportunity we can to make sure the cost won't hold them back."
